12/7 Postdam and Jewish museum

Today we have a half-day free time to visit the place we liked. I went to Postdam with some of my friends to visited the Sanssouci Palace there. Sanssouci Palace is the living place of Frederick the great. Yesterday I have visited the Charlottenburg, which is the living place of the grandfather Frederick the great. The palace gave me an impression that it is really small and not luxuries. A few days ago, I had visited the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, when I compare this two palace, the Sanssouci Palace is smaller in size, moreover in beautiful and luxuries, the Sanssouci is also far behind the Schonbrunn Palace. This may show the difference in power between two countries, Prussia and Austria. Sanssouci Palace was built by Prussia King, Frederick the great and the Habsburg King built Schonbrunn Palace. When Frederick the great succeeded his father, he was facing economic difficulties, even after he occupied the Upper Silesia, the economy grew, but their economic power is still very weak when comparing with Austria. Under such limitation, the Prussian King’s Palace is not as good as those of the Habsburg Family is understandable.

In the evening, we went back to Berlin and went to the Jewish Museum. This museum is not focus on the suffering of Jews suffering in the Second World War, but on the long history and development of the Jews around the world. The architecture of the building is very special and it won many prize. Also, there is a place which is very special, the floor of it is not flat, it is a little bit gentle, also there are lots of pillars over there. They seem straight in line but when you walk through the pillars, you walk on straight line, but you will find that the pillar may block you. It is because the floor has some gradient and also the pillars are not straight in line. Therefore, if you walk straightly, surely the pillars will block you and also you find that it is difficult to walk in straight line. These decide is to represent the feeling of the Jews who leave their home countries and go to a new place to find living. They should facing many uncertainty when they go to the new place, but after a few generation, they will accustomed to the life of the new place.
Also, there is a display called (memory voil), there are thousand pieces of iron. Each piece of iron represent a face of people, moreover, the look of each iron piece is different, but none of them are showing happy. These iron pieces were used for letting people remember those Jews suffered by wars, not only those suffered in Holocaust. When I walk on the iron pieces, the sound come from the strike among the iron pieces let me have a very special feeling. I seems hear the plaintive cry of the Jews, so at that time, I also get a sick at heart. Also, there is very dark and a blind alley for the place of display, the sense of desperate is very strong.

Later, I walk around the museum and know more things about the Jews. They discriminated by other races even in Romanic period. Then, they need to go around the world to find a life. They do not have their root in any country, because they are discriminated by others. Later, they were killed in large number in the Holocaust and they are the greatest victims suffered in the wars. After knowing more about the Jews, I got more sympathy to them.

At night, we went to the National Assembly, there were many people waiting for getting inside. We waited for about half an hour, and then we could get in. We take the lift to the top of the National Assembly, the transparent cupola there was so great, and we could saw the whole view of Berlin on it. The National Assembly was destroyed in the Second World War, but it was rebuilt now. This showed that the Germans was recovered very quickly.
